A science-based target (SBT) is a greenhouse gas emissions reduction target that is aligned with the level of decarbonization required to keep global temperature rise below 2°C compared to pre-industrial levels.
A science-based target for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is similar, but tailored to the specific circumstances and challenges faced by smaller businesses. This pathway takes away much of the complexity of a standard SBT and is less onerous. Having a SBT is a strong market signal that you are serious about your target and one of the best protections against Greenwashing claims
To set a science-based target, SMEs can follow the methodology developed by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This involves calculating their baseline emissions, identifying reduction opportunities, and developing a target that is consistent with the latest climate science.
The SBTi has developed a specific framework for SMEs, called the SME Climate Hub. This framework provides guidance and resources for SMEs to set and achieve science-based targets, including tools for measuring and reporting emissions, case studies, and best practices.
Setting a science-based target can benefit SMEs in several ways, including reducing costs, improving resource efficiency, enhancing their reputation, and attracting customers who prioritize sustainability. Additionally, by aligning with the goals of the Paris Agreement, SMEs can contribute to global efforts to mitigate climate change and create a more sustainable future.
